Want a Jail Cell Upgrade? That’ll Be $155 a Night

Want a Jail Cell Upgrade? That’ll Be $155 a Night | TIME.com

A detention center in Fremont, California is the most recent jail in the state to let inmates pay to stay in a newer, less-crowded facility than the regular county jail. For $155 per night — about the cost of a three-star hotel — both men and women convicted of misdemeanors can bunk in a special area of the Fremont Detention Center instead. While the new lodging option was intended to boost revenue and reduce overcrowding in county jails nearby, critics say the “alternative confinement program” is really just a jail for the rich.

North Carolina’s Republicans Celebrate Making Their State A Laughingstock

North Carolina’s Republicans Celebrate Making Their State A Laughingstock
North Carolina’s Republicans ended their legislative session with fiddling, dancing and ice cream on the floor of the House of Representatives, apparently oblivious to or unconcerned with the fact that only 35 percent of their state approves of the job they are doing.
“It was the final death knell to the progress made by years of social justice and civil rights advancements,” writesSadTimesinNC, who posted the video filmed by Carol Edward on CNN’s iReport.

Republicans To Spend August Recess Promoting Poverty Creating Policies

Republicans To Spend August Recess Promoting Poverty Creating Policies
After Republicans crashed the economy, many Americans knew at least one family that was having a difficult time paying bills, affording healthcare, finding work, or sending their children to college, but a new analysis reveals that, despite economic recovery, most Americans do not know anyone who is not struggling to stay afloat financially, much less prosper. That is good news for Republicans and their wealthy corporate supporters, but it is doubtful they will share the statistics with their constituents. Instead, they will spend three weeks promoting the policies that drove 4 out of 5 Americans into unemployment, near or at poverty, or reliance on government assistance they intend to ravage in the upcoming budget and debt limit battle with President Obama.

Gun Nuts Gone Wild In Arkansas

Gun Nuts Gone Wild In Arkansas
More than 20 teachers, administrators and other school employees will carry a concealed firearm at Arkansas’ Clarksville High School once classes resume later this month. The educators will undergo a 53 hour training course, and the school will spend over $70,000 to train and arm them— more than enough to hire a highly experienced teacher.
Stupidity at its finest. If this happened at a school where my kids attended, I would pull them out of that school as quickly as possible and move somewhere else

PolitiFact | Sen. Marco Rubio says 75% of small businesses say they’ll fire workers or cut hours under Obamacare - Pant on Fire Lie

PolitiFact | Sen. Marco Rubio says 75% of small businesses say they’ll fire workers or cut hours under Obamacare - Pants on Fire Lie

So, of all small businesses in the study, how many said they would cut back hours or replace full-time workers in response to the health care law?
Just 5 percent to 9 percent.
And that’s in line with other evidence. Most companies have 10 employees or less — far from the 50-employee threshold. Meanwhile, of firms with 25 to 49 people — a group Rubio said he was concerned about — 87 percent already offer health benefits, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation’s annual employer survey.
Of those with 50 to 199 employees — the smallest businesses actually subject to penalties in 2015 for not offering insurance — 94 percent already offer benefits.
Meanwhile, under the law, businesses with fewer than 25 employees may already qualify fortax credits for offering coverage — an extra boost they didn’t get before.

Delivering for America - Petition For Strengthening USPS

Delivering for America - Petition For Strengthening USPS

Every day, hundreds of thousands of dedicated letter carriers keep the economy moving by transporting letters and shipments to businesses and consumers. They provide senior citizens with the medications that they rely on to stay healthy. They deliver financial documents that we all count on, like paychecks and bills. By foot and by air, by truck and by boat, the Postal Service goes the extra mile in cities, towns and rural communities all across America.
Unfortunately, short-sighted decisions and proposals in Congress are putting these services at risk.
The U.S. Postal Service needs real reform to address the changing needs of the 21st century, but cutting key services upon which Americans depend is NOT the right way to do it. American citizens and businesses need the Postal Service to deliver.
Strengthening USPS, not shrinking it, is the best way forward for this great institution – and for America.
Sign the petition to show your support for reform that will strengthen the USPS in the 21st century.

No Free Sun for You! Why Arizona Wants to ‘Tax’ Solar Power

No Free Sun for You! Why Arizona Wants to ‘Tax’ Solar Power

Arizona does not have enough sunshine. It needs to ration that precious resource.
There’s no other explanation for the latest proposal from Arizona Public Service, Arizona’s largest electric utility. On July 12, it announced a plan to drastically change net-metering, the way in which homeowners and businesses with solar rooftops sell excess power back to the grid. Net-metering is the foundation for all solar leasing; without it, solar companies can’t entice homeowners with the promise of “cut your electric bill, no money down” but instead would rely on sales of expensive systems.
The proposal would slap existing solar-paneled homeowners with a fee of up to $100 per month for the privilege of selling excess power back to APS. If you own a home and don’t already have solar panels, no sun for you! You can never share in net-metering as we know it.

I'm a Progressive Democrat sharing information and news that I feel is important. I show the truth of what is happening politically, and point out the lies and propaganda that is so often coming from the right these days.

I believe if you are getting your news from FOX news, then you aren't getting any real news. It has been proven repeatedly to my satisfaction that FOX news leaves people knowing less than people who watch no news. There have even been University studies demonstrating that point.

I believe people should never be discriminated against no matter what religion, color, sex, sexual preference, age, country of origin, etc.

I believe the current attacks against women's rights across the country are wrong.

I believe in equal rights for marriage, no matter what sex each person is. Two people who love each other should be allowed to marry, no matter what sex each may be.

I think many of the new voting laws that are being passed in primarily republican states are discriminatory.

I think the wealthy should pay more taxes, and I think the safety net for the poor needs improved. (not cut as some are trying to do)

I think greenhouse emissions and global warming is what we need to be most worried about at this point in time.

I believe that we should protect the animals on this planet too, and that we should not be killing off any of them just for sport.

I'm against the new sport of killing wolves for trophies, and believe wolves should again be protected by the federal government. Otherwise, these beautiful animals may be decimated by the ignorant.

In other words, as I said, I'm a Progressive Democrat.

Groundswell Group Stoked Scandals with Help From GOP Leaders

Groundswell Group Stoked Scandals with Help From GOP Leaders
There was wave after wave of headlines about these so-called scandals. Some people wrote about what an awful week the White House had. It wasn't coincidence. It was orchestrated and planned by this group of people, who had the will and the power to secure the participation of people like Darrell Issa, John Boehner and more.

Obama Speaks Bluntly and Honestly About How Republicans Have Damaged America

Obama Speaks Bluntly and Honestly About How Republicans Have Damaged America

Republicans can never say the President did not make every attempt to compromise with them, or that he failed to slash the debt and deficit, or that he did not save the economy after they ravaged it with tax cuts for the rich, two unnecessary wars, and rampant deregulation during the Bush era. However, it appears they have pushed the President too far and punished the people too severely, because he is finally speaking honestly against Republicans’ damage to Americans, the economy, and the social fabric and calling for an end to austerity and income inequality driving American racism.

Group asks NRA to kick ‘racist’ Ted Nugent off its board

Group asks NRA to kick ‘racist’ Ted Nugent off its board

Nugent has been on a tirade about race in America since George Zimmerman was acquitted for killing Martin, notably calling the dead 17-year-old boy a “dope smoking, racist gangsta wannabe” in a column for the conservative blog Rare, and a “gangsta wanabe, Skittles hoodie boy” ina separate piece for conservative conspiracy website World Net Daily.
Nugent also spoke to Internet conspiracy radio host Alex Jones on July 16, just two days before his WND column was published, claiming that racism against African-Americans is actually a “dirty lie” and accusing “black mobs” of “the worst racism since the Klan.”
“The blacks have bought into this lie that somehow they’re oppressed when the president is black, the attorney general is black, governors are black, senators are black, congressmen are black, mayors are black, Oprah Winfrey, the richest people in the world are black,” he insisted. “It is a dirty lie.”
Nugent went on to blame Rev. Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Attorney General Eric Holder for inflicting a “curse” upon black people that’s left them in “self-inflicted shackles.”

Fox News Continues To Push The Lie That Only Conservatives Were Targeted By The IRS

Fox News Continues To Push The Lie That Only Conservatives Were Targeted By The IRS

The only lies being told here were coming straight from Fox News. Their beloved scandal that was going turn Barack Obama into Richard Nixon has fizzled out of existence.

Fox News is out of touch with reality, and they are spreading their hallucinogenic propaganda to millions of Americans each day.

President Obama Ruptures John Boehner's Pipeline of Keystone XL Lies

President Obama Ruptures John Boehner's Pipeline of Keystone XL Lies

Barely a week goes by without Speaker Boehner whining about the need to approve Keystone XL right now. What Rep. Boehner never tells anyone when he discusses the project is that he stands to personally benefit from its approval. Boehner is invested in seven tar sands companies that will benefit from the pipeline’s construction. This is why Boehner keeps lying about the values and virtues of Keystone.

GOP debunked: 'Obama phone' does not exist, program started in 2008 under Bush

GOP debunked: 'Obama phone' does not exist, program started in 2008 under Bush

The video was originally featured on DrudgeReport.com, a right leaning publication. Naturally republicans nationwide jumped at the chance to use this video as evidence against President Obama's policies in an attempt to discredit him. It might have worked, except the "Obama phone" does not exist.

This matter is resurfacing now, but it was originally debunked back in 2009 by Factcheck.org. Presently thinkprogress.org has taken the lead charge in debunking this myth.

Top 5 ways anti-immigrant hate makes its way into media and policy

Top 5 ways anti-immigrant hate makes its way into media and policy

Our current immigration system is broken. Deportations are at a record high, families are being separated, immigrant workers exploited, human lives are being lost at the border, there is rampant persecution and discrimination of immigrants and a continuation in the perpetuation of negative stereotypes and the criminalization of migration.

How did we get here? How did we sacrifice basic human and civil rights in the name of political posturing, agendas and money interests? What can we do to reverse this?
